ONTARIO ANTI-ONLINE GAMBLING MEASURE CUT (Update)
An addition to a provincial bill amending consumer protection laws that would have halted advertising for online gambling has been shelved.

Ontario media reports that an attempt by an Ontario provincial politician to halt online gambling advertising in the province (see previous InfoPowa reports) has been shelved following a review by the Social Policy Committee in late November, aided by some lobbying activity.

Attempts were made to include Bill 152 seeking to ban online gambling advertisements in the Canadian province in amendments to the Consumer Protection Act of 2002. If successful, the proposal could have disrupted advertising and sponsorship agreements over a range of sporting activities.

Although the amendment achieved a second reading in mid-November, it was reviewed later that month by the Social Policy Committee, where lobbyists were reportedly successful in persuading legislators that the bill contained sufficient ambiguities and conflict with the Canadian Criminal Code to warrant its exclusion for the time being.

A founder partner in the Toronto law practice of Elkind and Lipton, Michael Lipton cautioned that although the development was a positive one, the matter was not necessarily closed. The provincial government had tested the water, and Bill 152 has been submitted for a third reading.
