MORE DETAIL FROM GAMBLING PREVALENCE STUDY (Update)
57 percent of gambling in the UK is on the National Lottery

Yesterday's release of the Gambling Prevalence study, carried out by the National Centre for Social Research at the behest of the UK Gambling Commission, may have been an anti-climax after the extensive press speculation on its possible content, but it still contains interesting information.

The central finding was that, contrary to the 'the sky is falling' mainstream media speculation, there has been no significant change in UK problem gambling since the last survey in 1999....and that's despite the significant growth in the industry and gambling technology since that last survey.

Only six percent of all Brits gambled online at all, suggesting that the ease of access to gambling on the internet has had little effect on the gambling habits of UK residents.

And overall, the percentage of UK players categorised as "problem gamblers" remains at 0.6 per cent - low by international standards.

Taking the industry as a whole, the government approved and sponsored National Lottery was the principal gambling vehicle used by 57 percent of UK gamblers, followed by 20 percent on scratchcards, 17 percent on horserace betting and 14 percent on slots.
