Florida representative to launch proposal to exempt poker from UIGEA this week
A much anticipated bill designed to exempt poker and other games of skill from the provisions of the anti-online gambling Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act will be introduced this week by Florida Congressman Robert A. Wexler.

Wexler is a Democrat who wants to carve out "skill games" such as online poker, bridge, chess and mahjong from the online gambling prohibition, which forbids financial transactions with online gambling companies.  more...

Surprisingly, no media companies have picked up on this story probably due to this view being the speculative answer to a cheeky question from a delegate at last week's Gaming Investor conference. Total ban on UK online gambling ads now in force at Yahoo! and Google
The giant search engine and information site Google in the UK has extended its ban on Internet gambling adverts to embrace play-for-free sites with immediate effect.

Hitherto, advertisers were able to run ads on the search engine promoting free-to-play gambling websites. Now, that policy extends to cover all online gambling sites, including those where no money changes hands.  more...

Dow Jones reports that Sportingbet plc, the online sports betting and gaming group that is currently engaged in M&A talks with rival Bwin Interactive Entertainment AG, has posted a sharp rise in third-quarter profit, and remains confident for the remainder of the financial year.

The House Financial Services Committee chaired by Congressman Barney Frank has declared that it is to hold a hearing this Friday (June 8) to look at Internet gambling and its implications for the United States.

Change of leadership necessary following scathing ombudsman report on BC Lottery
Last week the CEO of the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, Vic Poleschuk was confident that he would remain in office to sort out the problems besetting the company (see previous InfoPowa report) His situation has changed dramatically this week, according to a report from CBC News.

Poleshuk, who appeared to be supported initially by chairman John McLernon, was fired this week following a scathing report by the province's ombudsman that found ticket retailers were apparently winning too often. Crackdown required to reduce to harm to young people, say officials
Citing the need to reduce the potential for harm to young people, Chinese officials will not license any more Internet cafes this year while regulators carry out an industry-wide inspection.

Industry speculation was rife this morning (Friday) as the news surfaced that Interactive Gaming Holdings plc shares have been suspended by the company, and unconfirmed rumours circulated that CEO John Heaton had resigned.

IGH operates UK online bookies Premier Bet and Heathorns, and delayed publication of its annual results this week on grounds that it had been unable to despatch these to its shareholders "due to unforeseen logistical issues." Another American Anomaly!
The US legal scene regarding sportsbetting is about to sprout yet another confusing anomaly with news that Delaware state legislators are planning to introduce a bill legalising a state-run sportsbook under the aegis of the Delaware Lottery.

Despite the activities of both enforcement agencies and politicians across much of the USA to prosecute sportsbetting (with a few notable exceptions such as horse racing) the new legislation will allow the practice in Delaware because it was not included in a 1992 federal law banning sports betting. This exemption was granted to the state because it once operated a failed sports lottery. Although operational activity on the project ceased before the end of the 1976 NFL season, it was enough to keep the option open in Delaware.  more...

Gambling ring accuseds face 34 felony charges
The Utah gambling ring raids a fortnight back (see previous InfoPowa reports) had a sequel in a US District Court this week when seven Las Vegas residents were charged with involvement in the illegal sportsbetting enterprise. All seven pleaded not guilty at the arraignment and detention hearing.

Hill Financial Services and Gateway Technologies also entered a not guilty plea to money laundering, racketeering conspiracy and bank fraud charges, according to U.S. Attorney Brett L. Tolman in a statement. Representatives from BetUS.com and CurrenC Worldwide, two other companies charged in the indictment unsealed earlier this month in Utah, were not present at the arraignment and have not yet been served, U.S. Attorney spokesperson Melodie Rydalch said.  more...

The inaugural Annual Johnny Chan Poker Classic at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond, B.C. ended this week with a truimph for poker pro Henry Tran and a winner's prize of $325 000.

By the time Tran sat down for the heads up with Joe Corbett he was $2 million ahead in chips, and the final action of the largely pro tournament was brief and professional through to the final hand, where Tran challenged Corbett with K-8 against K-6. No help came for Corbett and Tran took the honours, leaving Corbett with a consolation second prize of $200 000.  more...

Last year's anti-trust legal action by seven poker professionals against the World Poker Tour was in a Vegas district court again this week for a ruling on a request by the players for a summary judgement in their favour.

UK listed betting company Leisure and Gaming plc took the opportunity of its agm this week to provide a trading update on its main operational division Betshop Group (Europe) Limited. Whilst showing a generally positive first quarter, the update nevertheless noted "substantial adverse sporting results, including an Italian team winning the Champions� League", has resulted in a material trading loss for the month of May 2007, estimated at approximately Euro 1.4 million at the gross profit level.  more...

Chartwell Games, the European sales arm of Canadian turnkey provider Chartwell Technology is to lose CEO Lee Richardson later this year in an amicable split.
