It's a gamble - trying to reduce opposition to an online gambling ban by sliding around the exemptions issue
Whilst there are doubts that U.S. legislators will have enough time and support in the current Congressional season to get the latest attempt to prohibit online gambling approved, the Las Vegas Gaming Wire made some cautionary points on the issue this week.
In an article which took an objective look at the previously abortive US banning attempts (there have been six of these in the past decade) the Wire reports that prospects appear bleak that the Senate will pass a prohibition bill when it returns after Labour Day for the final weeks of the 109th session of Congress.

The Dutch government has reiterated its view that its policy on gambling does not violate EU rules, according to a report this week in NIS News. Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner briefed the Dutch parliamentary Lower House on his response this week.
Donner sent the letter in response to criticism from European Internal Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy, who expressed strong reservations about the Dutch gambling monopoly in a letter written in April. When land facilities in the remote Mong La area of Myanmar (formally Burma) close, an alternative rises....
Live-over-the-Internet gambling services accessible by Chinese online gamblers are taking shape in a remote Myanmar region close to China, reports the Asia Times Online this week.
The new facilities are the brainchild of the local warlord and are centred around the 'mini-Vegas' town of Mong La in Special Region 4, formerly a fave for Chinese folks with a gambling itch that needed scratching. Situated opposite the town of Dalou in China's Yunnan province, Mong La in the 1990s established itself as a Chinese tourism hub for gambling, but times have been hard for the past year or more following fierce Chinese clampdowns on citizens visiting the jungle casinos.
