The U.S. pressure group Poker Players' Alliance, which seeks to legalise online poker through regulation or securing a "carve-out" from current prohibitionary laws in America has upped its game with the appointment of the registered Washington DC lobbying and law firm Barnes & Thornburg.

In an unusal business combination, the UK branch of America Online (AOL) and the British subsidiary of a major German betting group, JAXX UK Limited will be offering sportsbetting facilities to UK AOL members in the near future.

It's official - in a company press release dated Monday 30 July, the Isle of Man-based e-wallet Neteller has confirmed that with effect from today US players have access to their accounts in order to withdraw funds frozen for over six months.

The online poker element on the Virgin Games site has big Internet and land crossover plans for 24 to 25 November this year, when the first Virgin Poker Festival will be held in the British city of Birmingham at the Broadway Casino.

Full schedule necessitates "re-evaluation of timing"
The Moscow Millions poker tournament scheduled for October 20 to 22 this year suffered a serious blow this week when online poker company Full Tilt Poker withdrew its sponsorship and team appearance due to over-full commitments.

A company spokesman said that Full Tilt would be focusing on other tournament commitments through to 2008, which has obliged it to re-evaluate the timing for the Moscow event. A Sunday Times report over the weekend could give further evidence of a cooler British government attitude to gambling in general and advertising in particular.

430 000 petition signatures sought by Christmas
From San Diego comes the story of an online poker player, Anthony Sandstrom aka "Tuff Fish" who has decided to do something about the legal restrictions on his favourite pastime and that great American game, poker.

This week the California secretary of state's office cleared Sandstrom to circulate petitions putting his proposed initiative on a statewide ballot, where voters could call for the creation of a state-owned Internet poker gambling agency, reports MediaNews from Sacramento. The private initiative, which will have to present state government with 430 000 signatures by Christmas 2007 to have any hope of success, faces challenges from anti-online gambling opponents but Sandstrom is confident he can mobilise public opinion for his goals.  more...

Party Poker to invest $100 000 to send two players to Scandinavian high stakes game

British bookmaker William Hill plc posted a 2 percent rise in pretax profit Thursday for the 26 weeks ended June 26, 2007 and said it would resume its share buyback programme while its Web poker and casino site continued to find the going tough.

The company reported pretax profit for the six months to June 26 of GBP 134.2 million ($272.6 million), at the upper end analysts' forecast range of 127.7 to 136.3 million pounds.  more...

Probability plc, a publicly listed mobile gambling technology specialist firm has posted a generally positive first quarter report that shows gross profit to end June up by 15.5 percent and a player base that has grown by 14 percent.
