A statement by the trade association the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) this week focused attention on a move by the French government to introduce a law against payments to gaming companies unless they are part of the French state monopolies Francaise des Jeux and PMU.

Canadian government could be planning its own UIGEA targetting Mohawks
The Canadian newspaper The National Post reports that the Canadian federal government is considering new measures to stamp out Internet gaming sites based in the Mohawk tribal enclave of Kahnawake in a move that could spark conflict between Ottawa and Canada's First Nations.

Barney Franks gearing up for another debate
The Washington news medium Politico reports that House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.), will use a hearing this spring to highlight the headaches he says UIGEA anti-online gambling regulations have created for banks and other financial institutions.

At the end of 2007, and way over their original 270 day deadline, the US Treasury and Federal Reserve published draft proposals of regulations giving teeth to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act which passed in late 2006. 46 to 20 votes in favour of the bill in first Knesset reading
Israeli politician Amnon Cohen's proposed bill to censor Internet content through ISP restrictions (see previous InfoPowa report) has passed its first reading in the Knesset by 46 votes to 20.

The bill calls for ISPs to block all gambling, sex and violence oriented websites, compelling any Israeli that wishes to access such sites to make application to do so. The Washington-based pressure group for the legalisation of online poker in the USA, the Poker Players Alliance, could soon be celebrating its one millionth member, according to an interview with executive director John Pappas conducted this week by the Pocket Fives information portal.

Since 2006 the PPA�s membership has exploded to over 930 000, Pappas disclosed, saying that he preferred to grow the orgnanisation, which spent over $900 000 in US lobbying last year, organically rather than through freeroll tournaments. UK gambling group's six month numbers are positive
The UK online gaming group Sportingbet plc swung back into profit in the first six months despite results going against it, reports Reuters news service, quoting the gambling group's chief executive Andrew McIver.

"With six months of the year completed we have achieved an operating profit of GBP 11.7 million versus GBP 4.0 million last year," said McIver.
