Constitutional violation and protectionism cited
A Renton, Washington lawyer has filed a lawsuit challenging the Washington state ban on Internet poker, the Seattle Intelligencer newspaper reports.

Lawyer Lee Rousso (49) filed his complaint in the King County Superior Court, claiming that the 2006 ban on internet poker is a direct violation of the U.S. Constitution's commerce clause, which prohibits individual states from enacting laws that discriminate against interstate businesses.  more...

Reports in online news media earlier this week that claiming that Islamic terrorists laundered money through its site, were challenged by the Betfair betting exchange today (Thursday) as 'simply incorrect'.

Swedish media reports in The Local are that the government's Tax Board (Skatteverket) expects to raise millions in taxes on previously undeclared income when it launches a special programme targeting web sites earning money from poker and gaming.

UK poker rooms to join Ongame network
Ongame Network, an online poker subsidiary of the Vienna-listed Bwin Internet gambling group has signed the British gaming house Redbet Limited to its network.

The Redbet group operates and manages several gaming brands including Redbet, TotalPoker, GoldClubCasino and MingelBingo.

According to reports circulating on industry message boards as the week ended, Turkish players exploited to the full a foreign exchange screw-up bonanza that saw some of them being charged the equivalent of only $10 for their $1 000 deposits at Boss Media casinos.

Organisers report a 40 percent drop in first day players.
World Series of Poker organisers do not seem overly concerned that the player entries for Day 1A of the main event are down 40 percent this year at 1 287 hopefuls.

But speculation that the reduced interest may be due to the decision to exclude online poker sponsorships this year may be a little premature. Jeffrey Pollack, the WSOP commissioner says the dip may be due to other factors and that there is nothing to substantiate the Internet exclusion theory.  more...

The main event action at the World Series of Poker continued to climb as Day 1B attracted a field of 1 545, with a possible 1 600 or more players planned for Day 1 C.

And in Day 1A (see previous InfoPowa report) a 1 287 player turnout was disappointingly lower than the previous year's 3 000 registrations when play commenced, with 837 players eliminated by the early hours of the following morning after around 16 hours of tough poker action, leaving 450 hopefuls to go through to the next round.  more...

Tories want minimum age of 18 years before gambling
The British newspaper The Daily Mail reports that the Leader of the Opposition in the British Parliament, David Cameron is going to call on the Labour government led by Gordon Brown to raise the age limit for all forms of gambling to 18.

The call follows a Conservative Party study by its Commission on Social Justice which found that imposing a minimum limit for gambling of 18 years was the "single most important" measure for combating problem gambling. Government gambling monopoly says it has to advertise to fight off foreign competition
The Local in Sweden reports that Swedish publications made over 700 million kronor ($103 million) by publishing gambling advertising last year in spite of the fact that the practice is illegal in the country. The figures reflect a quarter of a million kronor increase over the previous year.

The article quotes Hakan Hallstedt, Sweden's chief legal counsel at the national Gaming Board, who says that because no action was taken by the enforcement authorities, the Board felt it was "hardly worthwhile" reporting cases. Record revenues from Aussie gambling group
Internet betting operations are assuming increasing importance in the Australian sportsbetting group Tabcorp, according to financial results released by the company this month.

Revenue from internet sales in racing and sports betting has increased by 24 percent in the last financial year, the report reveals, surpassing the A$1 billion mark for the first time and now accounting for 11 percent of overall turnover, up from 9.5 percent in 2005/06, said Robert Nason, the managing director of the Austrailian gambling group.  more...

Top French Court favours EU approach to gambling
France�s highest appeals court, the Cour de Cassation, has ruled that the only justification the country can have for a monopoly on sports betting is through crime prevention.

The Gibraltar-bsed online gambling group 888 Holdings plc said on Thursday that first half trading was in line with expectations and that it is "confident" about its prospects for the rest of the year.

The company plans to announce its interim results on September 10.
