Does being allowed to welch on a bet make this "not gambling?"
Intriguing story of the week comes from a new online betting site called Betcha.com, which boasts that it is "the world's first honor-based betting platform," providing a P2P community for bettors who like the idea of "gentlemen's bets."
The site has the feel of a betting exchange, where members can bet on anything at all against each other, negotiate and counter-offer odds with potential betting partners and at the end of the day [hopefully] settle the resulting bets honourably. A pool system is also available for members who prefer the bet without all the peripheral activity.

US activities result in a lower attendance in Montreal as organisers consider alternative venues
Where do you think the next Global Interactive Gaming Summit and Expo should be held?
The GIGSE organisers are asking for preferences to ensure that there's a good turnout next year when this keynote event on the Internet gambling calendar celebrates its 10th anniversary.
In a letter to delegates, River City Group CEO Sue Schneider says that the last gathering in early June reflected the overall mixed tone of the industry in this strange new (US) environment, with reactions ranging from enthusiasm over a newly-leveled playing field and excitement about all the new faces in attendance to downright mourning by old-timers who saw clearly that things have changed so dramatically.

Spanish consumer protection association demands investigation
With the ink hardly dry on a major sponsorship deal between the famous Real Madrid football club in Spain and top Austrian online betting group Bwin Interactive (see previous InfoPowa report) it appears that a consumer protection association is trying to throw a spanner in the works.
The Asociacion de Usuarios de la Comunicacion (AUC), a watchdog association for the Spanish communications industry has lodged a complaint with the administrative branch of Spains Ministry of Economy and Taxes, claiming that online gambling activities in Spain are illegal if carried out by unlicensed companies, therefore rendering illegal the promotion of online gambling. AUC executives have demanded the commissioning of an immediate investigation into the sponsorship.

Speculation mounts on the possible reasons for Party Gaming's US talks
Speculation in UK business circles is mounting following last week's disclosure by the London-listed online gambling group Party Gaming that it was involved in discussions with US authorities over its legal position in that country.
Party pulled out of the US market, losing a large chunk of its revenues on the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act last October, and over the past month has reportedly been exploring its legal position regarding US operations prior to the introduction of the UIGEA, which prohibits online gambling financial transactions.

European Union asks for compensation from US for online gambling ban
Just a few days before the June 22 World Trade Organisation deadline for compensation claims against the United States in respect of its protectionist stand on Internet gambling, the European Union has given notice to the United States that it expects compensation.
Major EU region companies such as Sportingbet plc, Leisure and Gaming plc, 888.com and Party Gaming had to exit the US market late last year when Washington stopped U.S. banks and credit card companies from processing payments to online gambling businesses. Companies and investors lost billions in plunging revenues and share prices as a consequence of losing half of the world's online gambling action, estimated to be worth around $6 billion.

Ban imposed on sponsored cycling team condemned as scandalous
Online gambling group Unibet is understandably outraged at a ban on its sponsored Green Cycle Team from next month's Tour de France - allegedly because of French laws that forbid online gambling advertising by foreign companies. The injustice is compounded because the main sponsor of the Tour, which begins in London, is France's horse betting monopoly Pari Mutuel Urbain, with French lottery operator La Francaise des Jeux the sponsor of a team, too.

640 entrants signed up for the $5 000 No Limit Hold 'Em competition in the World Series of Poker over the weekend at the Rio in Las Vegas, creating a seriously large prize-pool that would eventually cough up a main prize worth $730 740 after three days of hard and competitive poker.
By the second day the field was down to 85,and of those only 63 made the money bubble and cashed...and only nine of those made it to a largely experienced final table where Karga Holt held an imposing chip lead on 1 211 000, with the closest competition young gun James Mackey (21) on 1 074 000 and the low man on the chip count Michael Binger on 240 000.
