Ex-Neteller directors detained in seperate arrests
Industry observers are still scratching their heads over the arrest in the United States of two ex-founding directors of Isle of Man-based public company Neteller this week.
Although still shareholders of the successful and legally registered financial processing company, Canadians John LeFevre and Steve Lawrence had severed executive and directorship ties with it when they were arrested Monday morning in Los Angeles and the St John island in the US Virgin Isles.

Money laundering offences claimed by US Attorney General
The case against two ex-Neteller directors arrested Monday in the United States (see previous InfoPowa reports) was outlined late Tuesday this week by the US Attorney General in the Southern District of New York.
Although they no longer have management connections to the Isle of Man financial company, Neteller founders and Canadian citizens Stephen Lawrence (46) and John Lefebvre (55) have been charged with money laundering offences.

John Lefebvre to be released but must remain in the USA
Late breaking news Wednesday morning in the USA is that former Neteller executive and founding shareholder John Lefebvre has been granted bail following an appearance in court in Los Angeles.
Department of Justice spokeswoman Rebekah Carmichael said, "He will be released after satisfying the bail conditions of $5 million fully secured by cash or property; pre-trial supervision; surrender of all travel documents; and travel restricted to the Central District of California, except for trips to Southern District, New York for Court."

US enforcement appears convinced that the world is their jurisdictional oyster
The recent arrests of Neteller ex-directors Stephen Lawrence and John Lefebvre whilst visiting the United States highlights once again that if American officialdom can get its hands on Internet gaming executives, it is prepared to bring charges that stride over international boundaries.
Anyone reading the press release from the US Attorney General's office that reported the arrests can have little doubt from the tone and content that the officials involved know very well how effective threats and aggression can be, even in an industry that has hitherto thought itself safe through companies positioning themselves outside US legal jurisdiction.

One of the more distressing images generated by the vast media coverage on the arrest of two Neteller ex-directors on money laundering charges this week concerned the arrival in a US Virgin Islands court of Canadian citizen Stephen Lawrence, who had earlier been arrested by FBI agents on the island of St. John.

The first Neteller casualty
Instacash, the fast lane channel for depositing and receiving funds via Neteller was the first casualty of the Lawrence-Lefebvre issue, with the Isle of Man financial company stopping the service for American players shortly after the arrests early this week.

It appears that Isle of Man based Neteller has caved in to pressure from the US Department of Justice, exerted through the recent arrests of ex-founding directors Stephen Lawrence and John Lefevre. The e-wallet company has put up a notice advising US players that effective immediately they will not be permitted to make transfers to or from online gambling sites.

For the players, it was an unexpected shock when notices suddenly went up on the Neteller site abruptly advising that "with immediate effect" all US player transactions with online gambling sites would be banned (see previous InfoPowa report) But Reuters reported today that the Isle of Man-based e-wallet had been planning such a move since November.

Canadian processor leaves US market
One of the most widely known payment processors in online gambling, the Canadian-based Citadel Commerce has backed hurriedly out of the US market in what seems to be a domino-effect reaction to the Neteller departure this week.
Parent group ESI Entertainment Systems Inc, has announced that the e-wallet will no longer offer financial processing to online gamblers in the United States.

Claim that Atlanta operation is to be shut down and staff pink-slipped
Hot on the heels of the news that it will not be exhibiting at the International Casino Exhibition this year comes word that turnkey provider RealTime Gaming is to leave its longtime Atlanta, Georgia headquarters to move to Costa Rica.
Quoting unidentified sources it claimed were "close to the company" a portal site reported that the company is about to close down its US operations and retrench staff prior to a move to Costa Rica. Whilst this is a possibility given the difficult US legal situation, there has been no confirmation of the report, and an ominous silence has greeted all attempts to obtain a clarifying comment from the company.

Latest Nielsen/NetRatings applications study released
The latest British internet applications study from the research and ratings organisation Nielsen/NetRatings shows that the fave for Britons online is Internet poker.
The analytics company credited broadband for the rise of what it termed "addictive" activities and reported that 83 percent of Britons online now use some kind of online application like MSN Messenger, or AOL Companion. This is the first publication of Nielsen's "Applications Index," a ranking of the most popular, most addictive (i.e. time spent) and "stickiest" (frequency) Internet applications.

Revenues lifted by 80 percent for skill games company
Lorne Abony's Fun Technologies released an upbeat trading report this week reporting an impressive 80 percent rise in revenues for the year ended December 31.
The update noted that revenues for year 2007 should be in line with predictions, but added that the decline in gross margin percentage compared to pre-2006 levels may require it to look for additional funding to continue operating.

Carlton clears the air on detention reports
Safely back in his Gibraltar headquarters, Victor Chandler group CEO Michael Carlton has issued a statement clarifying his widely reported "detention" by the authorities in Israel earlier this week.
In fact the meetings were prearranged says Carlton, commenting: "I traveled to Israel for a preplanned meeting with government ministers, at their invitation, regarding licensing arrangements in the country. Before leaving I was invited to spend two hours with the Israeli authorities answering their questions regarding online gambling in Israel, he said, not detailing what the questions were.

The British betting group Ladbrokes has confirmed industry talk that its managing director, David Briggs will soon leave the company. It is not known who will succeed him, or the exact date of his departure.

Weekend press reveal Ladbrokes strategy
Speculation in Britain on the possibility of Ladbrokes taking over the Gibraltar-based 888.com online gambling group went up a gear over the weekend with media reports on the British bookie's alleged strategy.
Sky TV and the Financial Mail on Sunday reported that Ladbrokes could avoid potential US legal action with a specially-tailored GBP440 million takeover plan for 888, in a strategy which would see it strip out the majority of the latter's assets, rather than acquiring the group as a whole.

The online poker Sunday specials market seems to have plenty of room to grow, judging by the steadily rising interest in these weekend competitive events with big paydays.
Last weekend stayed with the rising trend, with Poker Stars.com recording yet another starting field record of 7 632 players, all intent on going after a chunk of a prizepool that reached $1 526 400, which meant that the cash filtered down to another new record of almost 1100 participants. The British Medical Association seems to have released a report originally scheduled for January 22, judging by coverage in UK newspapers and on the BBC today. Joining the UK anti-gambling reportage over the weekend was The Guardian political section, which considered the political motivations behind the British government's decision to reform gambling legislation and regulate rather than prohibit.
Commenting that the plans to make Britain an online gambling centre have yet to be implemented the newspaper reports that already one million people are gambling online, according to the findings of a survey for the Culture Department by Rs Consulting, and up to six million according to the Nielsen/Netratings agency.

Doing his bit for charity, poker ace Phil Gordon raised $5 000 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week by partnering with Cisco Systems to raise funds for the U.S. Disabled Ski Team

The 747 hopefuls who received their first cards at the start of the Aussie Millions Main Event is down to the final 14 after some hectic Day 3 action that saw more aces bundled out of the competition, where the winner takes a $1.5 million paycheck home.
80 players who sat down, the survivors of Days 1 and 2 and all guaranteed a slice of the prize money, had plans for that $1.5 million main prize. Second time unlucky for British online sportsbook
Online betting firm Sportingbet's long tussle with a Canadian company that has registered the domain "Sportingbet.net" ended in failure this week in the second setback of this nature experienced by the company, which had earlier tried to force the surrender of the domain "Sportingbet.biz."
Working through its subsidiary Internet Opportunity Entertainment, Sportingbet took the Canadian company Zubee.com Networks before the World Intellectual Property Organisation's Arbitration and Mediation Centre, claiming that the company had no legitimate interest in the domain and that it was acting in bad faith in registering and holding on to it.

Unlicensed Texas Hold 'Em tourneys are getting official attention in Canadian province
The Canadian national police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have been active in the Atlantic province of Nova Scotia recently and are reported to be investigating some 60 allegedly illegal poker games in the region.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported this week that the Mounties are paying particular attention to games of poker being run by local public houses, even where the effort is on behalf of charities. Describing these events as unregulated and unlicensed the RCMP has warned that those involved in organising the games will have to obtain a permit or run the risk of a criminal prosecution.

The London business press is reporting that marketing expert Vikrant Bhargava, one of the four founders of the Party Gaming group has just sold another 4.1 percent share in the company.
Both the Financial Times and The Independent are carrying the report about the industry executive, who reaped a GBP50 million windfall after selling some 160 million shares at 30.5 pence yesterday.

Season three of poker television's hottest show starts January 15
Big money and competitive action are the hallmarks of Game Show Network's popular poker series "High Stakes Poker" and fans will be looking forward to January 15 when season three airs at 9 pm Eastern Time.

New survey has small sample but big money numbers
A survey of 664 UK office workers by the Morse business and technology consultancy, together with unspecified "workplace information" from the Office of National Statistics claims that online gambling whilst at work costs British companies more than GBP 300 million a year.
Reporting on the survey, the BBC said that millions of Brits gamble online every month, with 30 percent of them doing it at the office with a consequent loss of productivity quantified at GBP 300 million or more.

Revenue Giant taken over by Gambling Ventures plc
Affiliate marketers in the Giant Revenue program were this week being advised that the company has been taken over by the Isle of Man based Get21.com blackjack tournament operation.
Get21.com and its sister software development company RNG Gaming Ltd are subsidiaries of Gambling Ventures plc, an Isle of Man entity set up in a joint venture between the Israeli technology outfit Zone4Play.com and the Golden Palace online casino group.

Experienced affiliates manager hired
There has been a change in management at the 400Affiliates program, which handles Rival software powered casinos. Former manager Justin Kelly has "moved on" to be replaced by the experienced former Adriches and Casino Profit Share affiliate manager Rakesh Karan.
