Online gambling to be regulated and licensed in South Africa
Starting the week off in positive vein comes the news that the South African Parliament has at last approved a new Internet gambling law to strictly regulate and licence operators. The approved bill will now go to President Thabo Mbeki for signing into law.

A memorandum attached to the National Gambling Amendment Bill said the interactive gambling industry in Africa's biggest economy was currently unregulated and "generally plagued" by crime. But new CEO will still be a top earner
The news that St Minver's CEO Jim Ryan is to become Party Gaming's boss when Mitch Garber leaves later this year (see previous InfoPowa reports) has been followed by media reports that his remuneration package - whilst still impressive - will be lower than that of his predecessor.

Garber joined the company with a much discussed package worth some GBP40 million when it floated on the London market, with the Canadian executive arriving just in time to steer the group through one of its biggest trials when the UIGEA was passed and it had to exit the American market.  more...

Electronic gaming ban may be changed following EC submission
Back in mid-2002 the Greek government was widely criticised, and even became a laughing stock in some quarters, as a result of its overkill ban on all electronic gaming - including that taking place on private PCs - in the EU member state (see previous InfoPowa reports.)

Law 3037/2002 was a politically misguided attempt aimed at putting an end to online gambling; but it ignited international criticism for its over-the-top nature, exacerbated by subsequent police raids on Internet cafes.  more...

RCMP investigator reports a loophole in Ontario province casino system
A 2004 police investigation into drug trafficking in the Ontario province of Canada had a sequel this week when the police revealed that suspects linked to the crime ring used local land casinos to launder money, playing frequently and depositing amounts of up to $9 000 into the slots.

Police investigator Joe Peel told the CBC: "They would go in, under the threshold of $10 000, play various machines and then, at some point, cash out, get the little stubs from the machines and then ask for a cheque." Keeping the amounts below the notifiable $10 000 level was important so as not to attract the attention of casino staff, who are required to report transactions higher than this amount to the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC).  more...
