Oregon Congressman joins the IGREA pro-regulation ranks
HR 2046, the Internet Regulation and Enforcement Bill legislative proposal initiated by Representative Barney Frank which seeks to regulate and license online gambling in the United States has another co-sponsor - the 41st American politician to register his support.

Oregan Representative Earl Blumenauer signed up to support the Bill this week. He has a highly credible career in politics going back to 1972 when he served his first term in the Oregon House of Representatives, and was admitted to the US House of Representatives in 1996.  more...

Social costs of young gamblers currently being considered
Asian media are reporting that the government of the Far Eastern gambling mecca Macau is considering raising the casino entrance and working age from 18 to 21. The motivation for such a change is to ease public criticism of the booming regional industry.

Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau-wah announced the move this week, saying that it was impossible to let gambling expand infinitely, "....otherwise social costs will mount". Casino workers currently under the age of 21 will not face redundancy if the new rule is imposed, as a three-year grace period is envisaged.  more...

Britain's new anti-smoking and gambling regulations blamed
More UK bingo fans could find their way online as land bingo sites feel the pressure of new anti-smoking and gambling regulations.

This week the major London-listed bingo company Top Ten Bingo posted a slump in pre-tax profits of GBP 465 000, from GBP 846 000 in the same period last year to GBP 381 000 for the six months to September 30. The land bingo operator is the third largest in the UK with 38 bingo clubs and cited the smoking ban and the UK's new gambling legislation tax regime as factors, warning that 'difficult' market conditions would persist through the second half.  more...

State monopoly's charity donation impacts bottom line
The Greek government's state gambling monopoly OPAP showed its charitable side this year with a donation of Euro 25 million to victims of the wild fires that ravaged the countryside this summer.

The donation is revealed in the company's latest third quarter results which reported a 12 percent fall net profits to Euro 112.1 million, which it attributed to the one-off donation to victims of the recent wild fires.  more...

Licensing jurisdiction issues progress report
The Kahnawake Gaming Commission, which licenses Absolute has issued a progress report on its investigations into the hole card cheating debacle at the online poker site (see previous InfoPowa bulletins), indicating that a report could be presented to the Commission by December 7.

Vienna-listed online gambling group Bwin turned in its third quarter results last week, showing a core profit and resurgent growth in players, but the stock dropped 15 percent on a net loss number that possibly worried investors, reports Reuters.

New Jersey man admits to promoting gambling
An online sports betting sting operation had a sequel this week when William Motto (52) was sentenced to four months in the Camden County Jail as part of a probationary sentence for promoting gambling. He was additionally ordered to pay a $5 000 fine by Superior Court Judge Thomas A. Brown Jr.

Despite the paucity of progress reportage from Absolute Poker on investigations into the tournament cheating scandal that has engulfed the company for the past three months, it continues to be the subject of intense player discussion and media coverage.

After first denying that there was a problem when the player community exposed the cheating, Absolute Poker later admitted that a flaw in its software had enabled a company consultant to view other players' hole cards and win up to $800 000 unfairly. 27 percent of online poker players at Svenska Spel could be at risk
Readers will recall a brief pre-publicity report carried by InfoPowa earlier this year on a study by the Swedish National Institute of Public Health carried out on the orders of the Swedish government to assess the social impact of Svenska Spel's venture into online poker.

This week IGN reports the release of more detailed figures from the survey, which involved a significant sample of 16 500 respondents over a one year period, and flagged the danger of 27 percent of online poker players becoming problem gamblers. Legislative amendments bring payment processors under gambling laws
It appears from Norwegian media reports on recent legislative activity that Culture and Church minister Trond Griske is pressing ahead with his plans to constrain online gambling in the Scandinavian country by dislocating payment systems to online gambling companies.

Last month, InfoPowa commented on Griske's reported plans to introduce a Norwegian version of the notorious U.S. Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) but the minister has apparently chosen instead to amend existing gambling legislation so that payment processors fall within it.  more...

The Bulgarians could be considering a more pragmatic approach to online gambling following a review into the taxation of gambling generally in the Eastern European nation.

The owner of the Bodog online gambling group fired another broadside at patent litigation opponent First Technologies this week on his blog Calvin Ayre, taunting 1st Tech's CEO Dr. Scott Lewis on an alleged decline in the Bodog domains he holds by court order.

The two companies are still locked in litigation over 1st Technologies claim that Bodog infringed patents on Internet technology, which led to Nevada and Washington judges awarding a $49 million default judgement against Bodog, and delivered the Bodog domains into the hands of 1st Technologies. Challenge to Washington state online gambling ban bogs down on discovery motion
The strategic use of the discovery provision in American law has resulted in a lawsuit challenging the validity of an online gambling ban in the state of Washington bogging down.

Aussie company forecasts good news for investors
The Adelaide Advertiser reports that the Australian wagering and online gambling firm Centrebet International is forecasting a net profit of as much as $13.6 million this financial year and is on the acquisitions trail going forward.
