World Trade Organisation appeal panel judges that American government is discriminatory when it comes to online gambling
A ruling the tiny Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda has been keenly anticipating was made by World Trade Association officials this week, who found in favour of the islanders in their long David and Goliath tussle over online gambling with massive neighbour the United States.
The U.S. ignored a WTO dispute ruling that found it discriminates against foreign gambling companies and nations by banning payments to gaming Web sites while allowing bets on its own soil, the global trade body's highest judges said.

Globalcom bought for US$ 32..4 million
Gibraltar-based online gambling group 888.com has clinched a deal to add the online bingo business of Globalcom to its stable of online entertainment venues.
Total consideration in the deal is $32.4 million, the company reports, with an earnout fee of a further US$11 million payable in cash within 12 months depending on performance.

The Gibraltar government plans to create a new post of Ombudsman for financial services and the gambling industry, according to press reports emanating from the territory this week.

UK betting group has the Channel Isles in mind
Uncertainty surrounding the precise operational requirements of the UK's 2005 Gambling Act has been cited by the British online gambling group Sportingbet plc as the reason for its decision today (Wednesday) to move to the Channel Islands.
The announcement advises interested parties that: "Given this uncertainty, and with ever limited time remaining to adopt the eventual requirements, the Board has now concluded that its most prudent course of action is to transfer those activities that it anticipates may be covered by the Act to a jurisdiction that has a more defined regulatory environment.

Corresponding US bank pulls the rug on Internet gambling transactions
Yet another manifestation of the far-reaching implications of the US Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act came to notice this week with the news that Curacao-based Giro Bank, which has hitherto been prepared to handle online gambling transactions, has been threatened.
Letter from Giro to its clients advised that its (unnamed) corresponding US bank had threatened to severe relationships unless the online gambling aspect of Giro's business was abandoned.

Maintaining monopolies by banning online gambling operators could lead to legal consequences, Germans told
The European Commission has fired another broadside at EU member states that interfere with the free passage of goods and services from other member states to protect their gambling monopolies.
Reuters reports that as the week drew to a close German regions were told by the European Commission to rethink plans to ban online gambling or face possible legal action, an official at the EU's executive arm said on Friday.

Government plans to introduce online gambling regulations similar to those adopted by Italy
The Warsaw Voice had some good news for online gamblers in the Eastern European nation of Poland this week, advising them that following the European Court of Justice in the Placanica case (see previous InfoPowa reports) the government is preparing to license online gambling.
The European Court of Justice has upheld regulations liberalising online gambling by handing down a ruling favourable to British bookmakers who had been banned from operating in Italy. Consequently, the Polish government is planning to introduce regulations similar to those in Italy, the newspaper claims.

Alberta tribe's chief claims UN backing for attempt to host and regulate online gambling
It sounds a little weird, but the chief of the Alexander First Nation in Alberta, Canada claims that his tribe has the support of the United Nations in its initiative to host and license online gambling at a new datacentre on the tribe's territory.
In a press release Friday titled "United Nations Declares Support for Alexander First Nations Online Gaming Regulation and Data Hosting Facility" and issued through the CCNMatthews newswire in Canada, Chief Ray Arcand and the Alexander Council announced receipt of a letter from the United Nations in support of the Alexander First Nation's regulation of online gaming and the development of a data hosting facility.

UK public company Sportech plc published an encouraging set of full year results this week, showcasing a positive move into profit flowing from some radical refocusing and restructuring.
The parent group for the famous Littlewoods football pools brand saw pre-tax profit rise to an impressive GBP 9.1million (US$18 million) compared to a loss last year of GBP 600 000. Operating profit rose to GBP 15.5 million, an increase of GBP 8.6 million on 2005�s figure.

Big financial guns take an interest in online cash processing
Europe-wide third party payment solutions provider Moneybookers has been sold to the Bahrain, New York and London based private equity firm Investment Technology Partners.
Existing Moneybookers shareholders are to maintain a significant stake in the company in terms of the agreement. Investcorp Technology specialises in private equity for small and medium-sized technology firms in the US and Europe and is part of the Investcorp Group established in 1982 and managing total assets of over US$10 billion. Some of the group's recent investments include the Euro 90 million buyout of Conduit Limited, Ireland's largest independent directory assistance business and the formation of Dialogic Corporation from a carveout of assets from Intel Corporation.

WSOP officials rule that rule transgressions were not deliberate
World Series of Poker winner for 2006 Jamie Gold has had his fair share of problems flowing from last year's competition in which he beat thousands of international and American players to take the Main Event bracelet and a massive $12 million winner's prize. Several online gambling portals speculating on reports that turnkey provider and online gambling software developer RealTime Gaming has been sold suggest that the buyer may be an existing licensee.

The owners of Planet Poker have decided to call it a day, citing the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act as their reason for closing the virtual doors of a pioneer in online poker. From March 31 a site which claims to be the first to offer poker online will cease to offer real money games.

Reuters reports that one in every ten Internet users fell victim to online fraud last year, losing an average of GBP 875 pounds each, according to survey results released this week. The survey of 2 400 people was carried out by YouGov for Get Safe Online, a campaign group set up by the UK government, police and private companies.

Credit card study prompts government to examine stronger controls
A study by credit card company JCC last year has prompted Cyprus government officials to examine ways of better controlling Internet gambling. The figure that concerns the authorities is the GBP 28 million in bets that JCC says Cypriots gambled over the Internet in 2006.
Complications could flow from Cyprus's membership of the EU and its insistence on an open border between member states for the free flow of trade and services, but the Finance Ministry is in the process of preparing a bill that would offer tighter control....and of course better tax generation.

Wrong ruling cost West Mercia pubs dearly
English police officials who advised local public houses (bars) in West Mercia that hosting poker games could cost their licence may have some explaining to do following litigation launched by a poker league this week.
The trade publication The Publican reports that the Nuts Poker League, which organises poker games in UK pubs is suing the West Mercia police on grounds that the cops misled pubs on the issue of whether the league games were legal.

Wiley politician Frank hints at an optimum launch window for his repeal measure

First WPT title for poker pro
Pro poker player J.C. Tran crossed off one of his career targets this week when he won his first World Poker Tour champion title in the World Poker Challenge at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno.
Tran had previously made it through to five WPT final tables among his many playing achievements, but this was his first WPT title. To pick up the winner's check of $683 473, Tran (30) had to prevail over a starting field of 475 pros and amateurs. The win also secures Tran a seat sponsorship worth $25 000 for the WPT championship at the Bellagio next (April) month.

Actor wins the Cardiff leg of major UK poker tour
There was a payday of note even by television actor standards this week for British actor Michael Greco, who won the Cardiff leg of the Grosvenor Poker Tour in the UK. One of Greco's career roles was as Beppe di Marco on the long-running EastEnders television soapie.
The Cardiff event was Greco's first major poker win as the actor showed skill and audacity on his way to the final table, beating a starting field of 314 players. Entering the final table, the actor was short-stacked but did not allow this to faze him, and he quickly built up a useful reserve with some shrewd moves, ending up as the chip leader among the final three survivors of the tough tournament.

Big losses at skill games group
Losses of US$ 128.2 million on revenues of $41.6 million clouded the results from FUN Technologies Inc, the Canadian provider of online and interactive casual and fantasy sports games this week.
Revenue from FUN Games totalled $21.4 million for the year, substantially from cash skill games platforms which include WorldWinner.com, SkillJam.com and their partner destination sites. The company also launched SCRABBLE Cubes, a 3-D adaptation of Hasbro�s classic crossword game, and leveraged SkillJam�s popular branded games content, including Bejeweled 2, Big Money, Chuzzle, Dynomite and Zuma, across the WorldWinner platform.

Only three months since launch, and poker book sold out
American poker ace Daniel Negreanu is counting rewards other than those from major global poker tournaments on the news that his book on poker's most popular game "Daniel Negreanu's Hold'em Wisdom for All Players" has not only been listed as the best-selling book in its category at Barnes & Noble, it is also going into a second printing less than three months following launch.

European Gaming and Betting Association launches in Brussels.
In a major move to expand, the European Betting Association has been replaced the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) launched this week in Brussels.
The new body builds on the foundations laid since EBA�s launch in 2003, carrying forward the acknowledgement by authorities throughout Europe of a trade association with a strong voice calling attention to national and European debates regarding the rights of regulated European-licensed operators to offer cross-border services.
