London bingo fans are trying out a new concept in their favourite game - an electronic bingo hall. The UK's first and sole fully-electronic bingo club has been opened in London and features 582 personal hand-held terminals which will replace the traditional paper bingo ticket.
The innovative technology is designed to help the industry present the game in a more contemporary manner as well as to offer customers a greater choice in terms of what they spend during a bingo night out, says operator Riva Gaming Group.

Ongoing hassle with US Department of Justice blamed for late results
The embattled e-wallet Neteller has announced in a rare press release that due to the ongoing investigation by the US authorities, the annual audited accounts for the year ended 31 December 2006 will not be finalised in time to send to shareholders by 30 June 2007.
This means that Neteller is unable to comply with Rule 19 of the AIM Rules that requires an AIM listed company to send its accounts to shareholders not later than six months after the end of the financial year to which they relate.

Bets Go Wild does not contravene US online gambling laws because no money is involved
The social networking site Facebook is about to enter the world of online gambling, but not in a way that will have US authorities on alert, because the "gambling" will not involve real money according to a statement issued this week.
US Facebook members will be able to bet online via the BetsGoWild.com gambling application. Although the bets will not be for real money this will allow Facebook's 25 million American members to have a wagering outlet that does not infringe the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) introduced by the US government in late 2006.

District appeal court rules against online gambling
Reports from the Israeli news publication Haaretz indicate that a District Court in Tel Aviv has upheld a lower court finding that companies operating online gambling websites targeting Israelis are breaking the law, even if operated and registered abroad.
The issue before the court involved an appeal by British businessman Michael Carlton, who is Chief Executive Officer of the Victor Chandler casino website registered and licensed in Gibraltar. Carlton was questioned earlier this year whilst in Israel (see previous InfoPowa report) by the Bat Yam fraud squad on suspicion of illegally running gambling operations in Israel, along with investigations regarding sports betting involving events in which Israeli teams participated.

Police in Penang, Malaysia busted a factory manager and two engineers taking a coffee break at the E-Gate complex....and using the free WiFi facilities to do a little online gambling and sportsbetting while they relaxed.
The trio, aged between 30 and 32, were picked up in a late afternoon police raid at the outlet, conducted after police received a tip-off.

Focus of new operation will be football
Irish online betting group Paddy Power.com is to augment its German foreign language gambling website with one in Spanish, although unlike its Internet operations in the UK, Ireland and Germany, the Spanish site will focus primarily on football rather than horse racing, Biznews reports.
The bookmaker is hoping to have the new site up and running in time for the start of the new Spanish football season at the beginning of September. The company has already begun recruiting Spanish-speaking staff, and may also open a number of betting shops in and around Madrid.

Blinded in a horrifying car crash, this poker player has made a major comeback
Perhaps one of the most heartwarming of the human stories emerging from the World Series of Poker currently running in Las Vegas is that of blind player Jason Holbrook which Fox News reported this week.
The Bakersfield, California man started playing America's favourite card game at the age of five and growing up to become a savvy player in family and community games. But it looked as if his poker days were over back in 1991 when, just before his 21st birthday, he was involved in a road accident in which his head was pinned beneath a truck and severely injured. Rescued in a coma, he awoke a month later to the medical news that his sight was irrevocably lost.

Monopolistic state gaming bans hurt Austrian online gambling group, says CEO
The chief executive of the Vienna-listed Bwin online gambling group has indicated in a German newspaper interview that his company may present the 16 German states with a major compensation claim after its business and reputation suffered as a result of monopolistic gaming bans.
According to ATE Online this week, co-chief executive Norbert Teufelberger told the German newspaper Stuttgarter Zeitung that he was confident the European Court of Justice would rule that the German states' efforts to protect their monopoly over games of chance is illegal.

Spencer told the Antigua Sun newspaper that Bush said he was aware of the details of the dispute, that he was pleased that the matter was raised and pledged to look into it in an effort to reach a resolution.

After months of warnings and wrangling, the governing European Commission will officially censure France, Greece and Sweden this week due to moves by those nations to effectively create a state monopoly in sports gambling, according to Agence France-Presse.
Greece is set to receive only an initial warning; however, both France and Sweden will be issued final warnings, before being taken to the bodies' highest court - the European Court of Justice.

Wednesday could be crunch day for EU nations France, Sweden and Greece, reports the Reuters news service, revealing that the European Commission will decide whether to take legal action against the three nations for restricting competition in their gambling markets.
"There will be some decisions made probably tomorrow by the college (of commissioners) on a number of member states," Oliver Drewes, a spokesman for the European Union's executive arm, told a regular press briefing. "This concerns France, Greece and Sweden for the moment. Those are the decisions on the calendar for tomorrow," he said.

Now it's comply, give better reasons....or face the European Court of Justice
The scheduled European Commission meeting took place as planned today (Wednesday) and now the enforcement body has requested France and Sweden to amend their laws �following consideration of their replies to letters of formal notice sent in April and October 2006�.
In its "reasoned opinions" to Sweden and France (who were earlier asked to justify their gambling monopolies - see previous InfoPowa reports) the Commission says it is not satisfied with the explanations and if the Swedes and French cannot comply with its demands or provide a more satisfactory justification within the next 60 days the matter could be referred to the European Court of Justice.

Austrian online gambling group quick to comment on EC moves
One of the first companies to react to the European Commission decision to demand changes in monopolistic French, Swedish and Greek gambling laws today (Wednesday) was Bwin, a major Vienna listed online gambling group.
In a long press release the company said it welcomes the decision by the EC to continue the infringement proceedings already instituted against France and Sweden in connection with gaming by issuing "reasoned opinions."

RIGT seeks to double funding for problem gambling
The Responsibility in Gambling Trust, Britain's largest funding body for problem gambling, is seeking to double its income to GBP 7 million by 2010...and from responses thus far it looks as if its appeal will receive sympathetic consideration from online gambling companies.
The Trust, which funds treatment services, education and research into problem gambling, raised GBP 3 million from the gambling industry in 2006/07� the largest amount ever donated. In the past three years, it has spent GBP 6 million on tackling problem gambling.

Blue Square turns in a solid performance
Online gambling site Blue Square.com delivered results that made an important contribution to the strong 5 percent growth in operating profit experienced by parent Rank Group during the first half of 2007, Rank reported to the market in a trading statement this week.
Rank recorded strong growth, due in part to a 37 percent gain in revenue at Blue Square, the gambling group revealed. Blue Square showed the best percentage growth in the group by a significant margin, maintaining an impressive performance with continued good returns in both gaming and in sportsbook.

Details still unclear on French government spokesman's comments
Ripples of concern were widening through EU nations today over reports on a French government spokesman's comment that France's new president Nicolas Sarkozy wants to axe a clause that makes 'free and undistorted competition' a goal for the 27-nation European Union in a draft treaty.
Whilst details of the claim were sparse as we went to press, there were reports that Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany opposed the French proposal, claiming that a number of European countries were facing EC legal action over their protectionist policies that excluded other EU nations from their markets, and that there should be no limits on free competition among EU states.

New Prime Minister Gordon Brown makes radical changes to the British Cabinet
Cabinet Ministers were coming....and going, in a major revamp of the British Cabinet today (Thursday) as new Prime Minister Gordon Brown settled in and took firm hold of governmental reins.

After only nine months of operations the Isle of Man-based online multiplayer blackjack tournament venture Get21.com is closing the tournament blackjack facility on July 15, according to a notice sent to players this week. The website does not have any notification of closure on it yet, but it is understood that tournament blackjack will now be available on the website of one of the Get21 partners.

Speaking to shareholders this morning (Thursday) at the company's agm, NetPlayTV CEO Martin Higginson revealed that the company has streamlined its operations over the past six months and is well positioned to reap the benefits of involvement in live roulette, lottery and interactive bingo.

EIG 2007 returns to beautiful Barcelona this autumn with a gathering at the CCIB Barcelona International Convention Centre with its wonderful setting on the city's seafront Diagonal Mar area that combines culture and commerce.
Over 1 050 i-gaming professionals from 42 countries converged on Barcelona for the European i-gaming Congress and Expo (EiG) last year. The conference programme spanned three days, featuring many of the biggest names in the industry. The online poker site Absolute Poker.com has introduced a new Bad Beat Jackpot that allows player suffering from bad beat blues to turn their situation around, adding a new spin to its Texas Hold'em poker games.
"We're taking away the pain delivered by bad beats by throwing money at the victims," stated David Clainer, senior vice president for Absolute Poker.
